The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) will announce on Tuesday, November 27, judgements in five cases filed against the Moldovan Government, including in the case of Timpul newspaper and journalist Alina Anghel.
The case of “Timpul Info-Magazin and Anghel v. Moldova” concerns defamation proceedings against the plaintiffs following the publication of an article in January 2004 which criticised the lack of transparency about a Government practice of purchasing luxury cars. Following the proceedings, Timpul was compelled to close down.
In another case the plaintiff is Petru Popovici, alias Micu, allegedly a mob boss operating in Chisinau in late 90’s, who is currently serving a life sentence in Rezina Prison. He complains about the unlawfulness and inhuman and degrading conditions of his detention.
Three other cases concern, in particular, complaints about the violation of the right to liberty and security (Article 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights).
