The early elections in Moldova have never led to a better situation than that before the elections. Now they are not a solution either as politicians who promote the pro-Eastern course to the detriment of the pro-Western one can come to power as a result of them for another eight years. Therefore, civil society must make effort to force the parties that consider themselves pro-European to govern the country better. Such an opinion was stated by the head of the National NGO Council Ecaterina Mardarovici in the public debate “What does civil society keep silent about? Views about the negotiations on the formation of a government coalition” that was staged by IPN News Agency in partnership with Radio Moldova.

Ecaterina Mardarovici noted that even if the NGOs do not have a common message addressed to the political class now that negotiations are held to form a new government coalition, these continue to work as earlier and implement different projects to improve the situation in different areas. The current ruling parties are unable to take into account the opinion of civil society. If the new government is open, the NGOs will be ready to provide expertise and recommendations.

“The European organizations urge us to cooperate. There are many organizations in our country that work in the same areas. If we want society to cooperate, we must show how this is done. We protested, submitted proposals and asked for priorities. Cooperation means supporting particular things and having courage to say that things go wrong where they go wrong,” said the head of the National NGO Council.

As to the negotiations between politicians, Ecaterina Mardarovici said the problem does not reside in the post distribution algorithm, but in the persons named to these posts. Society should not forget what happened in 2001, when the people were allowed to choose after the Democrats could not come to terms and eight years without democracy followed. “It is a myth that the people will make a correct choice,” she stated.

According to Ecaterina Mardarovici, the politicians adjust the legislation according to their needs. “Now they want the head of state to be elected by the people, as if we didn’t have two Presidents elected by the people and the crises couldn’t have been avoided. They must be forced to govern correctly and to give up amending the constitutional article concerning the election of the head of state. The parties should admit that they made mistakes and form a Government together as there is no other way out. The early elections never brought improved situations. We should force them to govern better than to risk having the Political Party “Our Party” in power for eight years,” she stated.

The public debate “What does civil society keep silent about? Views about the negotiations on the formation of a government coalition” is the 44th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are staged with support from the German foundation “Hanns Seidel”.
