The current needs of the Republic of Moldova are not reflected in what the political parties promote. Now the message of the ruling parties is rather convincing at foreign level. But this message should be reformulated for the people as it is not in their interests, Ecaterina Mardarovici, executive director of the Gender Equality Platform, said in the public debate “Starting position of political parties and eventual independent candidates on official pro-European platform before an electoral year”, which was the 84th installment of the series “Developing political culture by public debates” organized by IPN News Agency.

According to the expert, during the past two years the current government managed to avoid major ideological divergences even if the doctrines of the PDM and PPEM are of the left and, respectively, of the right. Injustice is now the top problem in Moldova. To combat this phenomenon, the political parties should provide a solution in the election campaigns. “We haven’t yet got rid of the mentality according to which we should be under someone’s wing. We have different voters. The theories developed until now do not really match the current situation in the Republic of Moldova,” she stated.

Ecaterina Mardarovici noted that the parties included geopolitics in their electoral platforms in order to satisfy the voters’ demand. “The demand comes from voters and the political parties and the politicians exploit this demand. In the Republic of Moldova, the current conflicts between the opposition and the government didn’t center on geopolitics and ideologies, but rather on the struggle against particular politicians,” said the activist.

She noted that no matter how harsh the political struggle is, the ruling parties should take into account particular things promoted by the pro-European opposition. The task of the government is to take consolidated and respectful steps as to persuade the others to have confidence in these electoral offers.

Ecaterina Mardarovici noted that if the mixed electoral system is used in the parliamentary elections of 2018, things in Moldova will go wrong as the parties are not yet ready for this system. “For the voters, it sounds nice, but the politicians should think about the interests of the state. If this system is not applied in 2018, everyone will have a chance. These incorrect things often cost the country a lot. We now have a ‘who beats who’ state of spirit. The delay in the implementation of this system would create opportunities for communication between the pro-European ruling parties and opposition. This is in the interests of the ruling parties and of Moldova,” she stated.

The public debate “Starting position of political parties and eventual independent candidates on official pro-European platform before an electoral year” was the 84th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are organized with the assistance of Germany’s Hanns Seidel Foundation. This is the fourth and last debate of the mini-series of debates staged by IPN the past few days, which involved representatives of parties from four main political platforms.
