The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) will lend €10 million to Moldova for developing a regional water supply and sewerage system in the municipality of Balti and in six northern districts. A lending agreement to this effect was signed by the Ministry of Finance and the EBRD, IPN reports.

The loan will be provided in two tranches of €6 million and €4 million respectively. It forms part of a financing package of €30 million, which will include a loan of €10 million from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and a grant of €10 million from the EU’s Neighborhood Investment Facility.

In the signing event, Minister of Finance Anatol Arapu said the financing from the EBRD and EIB and the EU grant will help modernize the Soroca-Balti water pipeline and extend and rehabilitate other water ducts in northern Moldova. This will lead to improved living standards in the region as the people will have access to water supply and sewerage services. “I’m glad that the lending agreement allows us to create a viable regional operator in northern Moldova,” stated the minister.

EBRD Director for Municipal and Environmental Infrastructure Jean-Patrick Marquet said the EBRD financing will contribute to a better quality of life for almost 190,000 people in the northern districts, where the basic necessities, such as access to water and sewerage, are not always satisfied.
