The lights-off event Earth Hour represents more than the symbolic gesture of turning off the lights for an hour. It is an invitation to change the world because everything we do has an impact on nature. It is also important to use the exactly necessary amount so as to save time, money and energy, it is said on the website ora-pamantului.ro, quoted by IPN. The people are urged to efficiently use the electric power and to unplug the electrical devices when they do not need them because these use 10% to 60% of electricity when they are on standby.

The electricity costs caused by some of the appliances on standby can be almost as high as when these work. Energy saving lamps or with LEDs should be used in the home and the lights should be turned off when going out of the room. It was established that the consumption of classical lamps represents 15% of the electricity bills.

Among the ways to save the electricity consumed by home appliances are also to wash the laundry and dishes with economical programs and to dry the laundry out, not using the dryer of the washing machine. It is also recommended thermally insulating the homes and offices because the buildings can lose enormous amounts of energy through warm air that goes out in winter and cold air that goes out in summer.

Specialists recommend using energy saving domestic appliances and using buy-back methods, when discounts are offered on new devices for old ones.

Earth Hour takes place on March 28. Within this event, all the people are urged to turn off the lights and unplug the electrical equipment between 8:30pm and 9:30pm.
