Suicide is a major public health problem, but it is often neglected and is surrounded by stigmatization, myths and taboos. Each case of suicide is a tragedy that seriously affects not only individuals, but also families and communities. Public health specialists warn that suicide can be prevented and each person can be a key player in preventing suicide. “Creating Hope Through Action” is the theme of World Suicide Prevention Day that is celebrated on September 10, IPN reports.

The National Public Health Agency said that 703,000 people die globally each year as a result of a number of suicide attempts and almost 77% of all the suicide cases take place in countries with small and medium incomes.

“Approximately 20% of the children and teens in the world have a mental problem and suicide is the second leading cause of death among people aged between 15 and 29. About one in five persons in post-conflict situations have a mental health issue,” said the Agency.

A number of 366 cases of suicide were recorded in Moldova in 2022, as opposed to 466 cases in 2021. In 87% of the cases, the victims were men.

According to public health specialists, suicide is a serious public health problem that can have long-lasting effects on individuals, families, and communities. It is yet preventable. Everyone can help prevent suicide by learning the warning signs, promoting prevention and resilience, and a commitment to social change.

In Moldova, there are 40 mental health community centers that provide medical assistance and psychological rehabilitation services for persons with mental health problems. Persons of any age with symptoms of mental or behavioral disorders or their family members can go there. Assistance is free and confidential.
