Duties of ministers who will run in elections will be taken over by secretary generals of state

Five ministers will run in the parliamentary elections of February 24, 2019 either in the national constituency or in single-member constituencies. The duties of these will be taken over by secretary generals of state.

Among the ministers who will run on the Democratic ticket are Minister of Education, Culture and Research Monica Babuc, who is under No. 5. Monica Babuc will also compete in single-member constituency No. 22 Ialoveni. Minister of Health, Labor and Social Protection Silvia Radu is under No. 20 on the list.

On behalf of the Democratic Party, Minister of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Nicolae Ciubuc will run in single-member constituency No. 15 Călărași, Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Kiril Gaburici in single-member constituency No. 31 Chisinau, while Minister of the Interior Alexandru Jizdan in single-member constituency No. 34 Anenii Noi.

In a response for IPN, the Government’s Communication and Protocol Division said the secretary generals of state will take over all the duties, except for the right to vote in the meetings of the Cabinet.

Deputy Minister for Reintegration Cristina Lesnic will also run on behalf of the Democratic Party and is under No. 19 on the list. Her duties will be taken over by the head of the Bureau of Reintegration Policies Marian Gherman.

Prime Minister Pavel Filip comes second on the Democratic Party’s list of candidates for the national constituency. He will also compete in single-member constituency No. 20 Strășeni.

Contacted by IPN, Andrei Volentir, a member of the Central Election Commission, said that under the electoral legislation, the ministers stop work when they are registered as election runners. The Premier and the Head of State are not oblige to leave office.
