The former minister of the interior Alexandru Jizdan is investigated for unjust enrichment and for his role in the famous Division 5, said acting prosecutor general Dumitru Rubu. He refused to provide details about the accusations made against Jizdan, invoking the secrecy of the investigation and the presumption of innocence, IPN reports.
The acting head of the Prosecutor General’s Office said that a criminal case on unjust enrichment that was dropped in 2021 was reopened and the searches conducted on Wednesday at the home of former minister Jizdan are related to this.
“The searches were carried out within two criminal cases. One of the cases was generically entitled ”Division 5” and the other case that was earlier dropped refers to unjust enrichment. It was determined that the earlier decision to drop the case taken by prosecutors in the summer of 2021 was vitiated. All prosecutors’ decisions we consider vitiated are illegal or are reported to the Superior Council of Prosecutors and disciplinary deviations are identified as a result of inspection. The searches today were conducted by the decision of prosecutors who are independent and who decide the next stages in the managed cases when sufficient evidence is collected,” Dumitru Robu stated in the program “Secrets of the Power” on JurnalTV channel.
Earlier, the Prosecutor General’s Office turned its attention to press reports about an eventual involvement of ex-minister Alexandru Jizdan in a crime committed in 2000. Dumitru Robu said that case remains unsolved as the statute of limitations expired and the prosecutors cannot break the law.
Following searches conducted by prosecutors in charge of special cases and SIS officers at Alexandru Jizdan’s home, the ex-minister came with a reaction, saying that while holding office of minister and sitting as an MP, he acted in accordance with the laws of the Republic of Moldova. He noted he will cooperate with the investigation bodies and will provide all the necessary information.
