Dumitru Matcovschi died with his heart bleeding. During the last few years, he was preoccupied with what happened in the political and social spheres. He didn’t complain that he encountered problems and had a difficult life as he lived on the eighth floor at the City’s Gates. He was always interested in what was going on in the Government and Parliament, said writer Ianos Turcanu, who is a family friend.
According to Ianos Turcanu, his talent saved him. “He surely was beaten and slapped. His books were not published. He always struggled. The last years were the saddest ones as he saw that nothing changed and he fought in vain for what he fought and hoped. He passed away unhappy because his country is unhappy,” the writer stated for IPN.
Ianos Turcanu said that Dumitru Matcovschi wasn’t supported during his life, but his talent helped him. “He spent the most beautiful moments at home, at the working table, or at the editorial office. When I got acquainted with him, I was resting on the seaside and he worked there too,” he added.
In May 1989, Dumitru Matcovschi was involved in a serious road accident as a result of which he had been in a coma for a long period. Doctors said then that his survival was a miracle. Afterward, he underwent 20 operations. Earlier this month he was operated on the brain as he had a brain tumor. The poet died in the evening of June 26.
Dumitru Matcovschi is the author of over 50 volumes of poetry, prose and plays. He is a member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. President Traian Basescu conferred the Cultural Merit Order in the Literature category on him.
