Hundreds of people, including co-villagers, people of art and politicians, bid farewell to Dumitru Matcovschi. The poet was laid to rest in his native village Vadul Rascov in Soldanesti district, IPN reports.
The funeral was attended by President Nicolae Timofti, Prime Minister Iurie Leanca and the president of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova Gheorghe Duca.
The commemoration meal was given in the parental home, where the poet spent his childhood.
Dumitru Matcovschi passed away in the evening of June 26 at the age of 73. Over the last few weeks, he had stayed in the hospital after undergoing brain surgery. The brain tumour from which he suffered was caused by a number of factors, including a brain injury that he sustained in a road accident 24 years ago.
Poet, prose writer, dramatist, publicist and academician Dumitru Matcovschi started to write in 1966 and is the author of more than 50 volumes of poetry, prose and plays. He is considered a symbol of the national renaissance movement in Moldova
