The leader of the Communists Party (PCRM) Vladimir Voronin says they will vote for Marian Lupu as head of state only if the Democratic Party (PDM) leaves the Alliance for European Integration (AEI) and there is formed a left-wing coalition. The statement was made by the president of honor of the PDM Dumitru Diacov at a news conference on October 19, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to Diacov, he has had four meetings with Voronin and tried to convince him to vote for Lupu as “Voronin has a say insider the party”. But his attempts failed as the leader of the PCRM is still angry that Lupu left the party. Dumitru Diacov said he would not accept Vladimir Voronin's proposal even if this will save the country from early elections. In another development, he stressed that the discussions inside the AEI are sometimes heated and that the PDM has to make more compromises as it polled fewer votes than the other Alliance members in the July 29 elections. He said he urged his colleagues not to go beyond limits. Though Marian Lupu denied having talked with Vladimir Voronin about his election as head of state, Dumitru Diacov said the two had a meeting, but underlined that all the contacts with the PCRM were broken about a month ago, when they refused to discuss further. Asked why Lupu rejects having had a meeting with Voronin, Diacov said that not everything that is discussed must be made public. According to him, the meeting between Lupu and Voronin could have been made known only if there had been achieved the expected results. Diacov said that 16 or 17 of the 20 Communist MPs with whom he discussed would like to vote in favor of Lupu in order to avoid early elections, in which the PCRM could win fewer votes. “Even the about 670,000 or 700,000 people who voted for the Communists do not want early elections,” he said. Dumitru Diaco also said that the PCRM should follow the example of the Opposition parties, which voted for the candidate proposed by the PCRM in 2005 in order to stabilize the political situation. The leader of the parliamentary group of the PCRM Maria Postoico earlier told Info-Prim Neo she did not know about negotiations between Communists and representatives of the AEI over the election of the head of state. She said she did not take part in such negotiations and had not been invited to them. Communist MP Grigore Petrenco avoided giving an answer to this question.
