The proposal to hold a local referendum in Balti on the dismissal of Renato Usatyi from mayoralty was submitted by Usatyi himself as he wants to bring to an end the speculations about the distrust of the inhabitants of the municipality in the local administration. This is how Dumitru Chubashenko, deputy chairman of the Political Party “Our Party” led by Renato Usatyi, commented on the January 3 decision by the Balti Municipal Council to hold the plebiscite, IPN reports.

According to Chubashenko, the referendum that will take place in Balti is a democratic procedure designed to undermine opponents’ actions against the current administration of Balti. The opponents plan to take control of the Balti mayor’s office by a raider attack and representatives of law enforcement agencies in Chisinau during the last few days exerted pressure on Balti councilors, who were scared and threatened with the opening of criminal cases and with dismissals.

Within 15 days, the Balti Municipal Council will hold a new meeting to decide the date of the referendum and to agree the model of the ballot for the plebiscite and the question that will be written in this, stated Dumitru Chubashenko.

The decision to initiate the referendum was adopted unanimously by the 27 councilors who attended the January 3 meeting. The Political Party “Our Party” is represented by 26 councilors on the Balti Municipal Council that has 35 members.
