The president of the Social-Democratic Party (PSD) Dumitru Braghis leaves the post as he did not manage to bring the party in the Parliament. However, he intends to apply again for the position of leader of the party. The election of the executive bodies, including of the new president of the PSD, is the last issue on the agenda of the 12th congress of the party held on April 17. A contender for the post of president might be Victor Selin, the head of the “Patria” movie theaters, Info-Prim Neo reports. At the start of the meeting, Dumitru Braghis said he will resign if the delegates accept the proposal to include in the statutes the stipulation that the president must quit if the party does not enter the Parliament. “The early legislative elections are not a risk, but a solution for Moldova and for the PSD,” Dumitru Braghis said, stressing that no progress was made after the Alliance for European Integration came to power nine months ago. “We struggled against dictatorship, not for establishing amateurism. We lose time and resources while fighting for political interests that are meaningless,” Braghis said. He referred to the provocations to which the party has been exposed since the last congress, during the two election campaigns, and the deflection of members from the party. Alexei Busuioc, the leader of the local organization in Hancesti, said he does not agree with Dumitru Braghis’ resignation. The president of the Gagauz People’s Assembly Ana Harlamenko said the people in Gagauzia support the PSD and consider that the early elections are a chance for the party to enter the legislative body. Ana Harlamenko proposed electing Victor Shelin as leader of the PSD and naming Dumitru Braghis as president of honor of the party. She said that such a method helped the Democratic Party enter the Parliament. At the congress, the PSD presented the project “Social Moldova”, which will be used as a government program if the party comes to power.
