Switzerland is one of the largest investors in the Republic of Moldova. As many as 120 Swiss companies have already decided to invest in the country and are present in a number of fields, from the production of medicines and processing of fruit and vegetables to the manufacture of electrical and electrotechnical equipment. These investments have contributed significantly to Moldova’s economic development, to providing well-paying jobs, and the growth potential is still considerable, Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization Dumitru Alaiba stated at a news conference held together with State Secretary and Director of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs of the Swiss Federal Government Helene Budliger Artieda, IPN reports.

The event took place on the sidelines of the eighth session of the Moldovan-Swiss Intergovernmental Commission for Commercial-Economic Cooperation, hosted by the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization in Chisinau. “We discussed how we can strengthen and expand the economic and commercial ties between the two countries, how we can capitalize on the huge potential in the economic sector. We want to open up new opportunities for investments, exports that in turn will create highly-paying jobs,” said Deputy Prime Minister Dumitru Alaiba.

The official underlined the importance of the friendly relationship between the Republic of Moldova and Switzerland, which is based on trust and long-term cooperation. “I reiterate our commitment to strengthening these ties and achieving common goals. I’m convinced that we will continue to cooperate and build a future that will bring economic benefits to both parties,” stated Dumitru Alaiba.

For her part, Helene Budliger Artieda expressed hope that the Republic of Moldova will become a member of the European Union with full access to the European market, which will be very beneficial to the Swiss investors in Moldova as well. The Swiss private sector will remain in the Republic of Moldova and will continue to create jobs, the Swiss diplomat said.

In March 2024, the Parliament voted to ratify the Free Trade Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and the EFTA member states (Iceland, the Principality of Liechtenstein, the Kingdom of Norway and the Swiss Confederation). The document was signed on June 27, 2023.
