The European Union is a collection of good examples for the Republic of Moldova and there are many countries that developed in the common European area, ACUM MP Dumitru Alaiba said in a public debate titled “Resetting of relations with the EU: motives, chances, guarantees” that was organized by IPN News Agency and Radio Moldova. “We can speak about a change in expectations. We do not want particular concessions or shortenings from the European Union. Our dialogue and relations with the European Union should be sincere, direct and based on results,” stated the MP.

According to Dumitru Alaiba, reforms should be implemented not only on paper. “We must prove that we can be better not only in criticizing an authoritarian government, but also in bringing about the change in which we believe and that we want,” he noted.

The MP considers not only the EU’s financial assistance is principal and decisive, but also the involvement of the European institutions in investigating cases of corruption. The money stolen from Moldova reached the EU and was used to finance all kinds of activities. It is in the EU’s interest to become more actively and more directly involved in the investigation of cases of corruption. The EU can impose personal sanctions against those involved in cases of corruption, can block their assets in EU countries, can sequestrate, confiscate and repatriate property. The EU was asked to provide assistance in this regard, but this wasn’t yet decided formally.

Dumitru Alaiba noted society should keep the government under pressure and be more categorical so that there is a self-cleaning process. “We speak about 30 years of zero tolerance of corruption. We should ensure a self-purification process or will fail. If we fail, it will be for the last time. The people have big expectations and if we fail again to meet them, this will be for the last time,” he said.

The MP also said that the EU helps the people, not the governments. “Each member of society will enjoy the EU’s support and this time there will also be a government that wants each member of our society to succeed in all their  intentions,” stated Dumitru Alaiba.

The public debate held by IPN on July 23 was attended by Socialist MP Gaik Vartanean, ACUM Bloc MP Dumitru Alaiba, vice president of the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova Iulian David and the IPN debates’ standing expert Igor Boțan. The European People’s Party of Moldova didn’t accept the invitation.

The public debate “Resetting of relations with the EU: motives, chances, guarantees” is the 114th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture through public debates” that are held with support from the Hanns Seidel Foundation of Germany.
