A bill seeking the change of the Court of Audits leadership has been registered in Parliament. MP Dumitru Alaiba, of the ACUM/PAS group, announced this on his personal blog.

Although the incumbent Court of Audits president Marian Lupu praised the previously registered draft law, meant to strengthen the institution's financial independence, the former Democrat must leave his position, considers Dumitru Alaiba. He added that, along with Marian Lupu, Viorel Chetraru, the Court of Audits Vice-President, must leave as well.

In his post, Dumitru Alaiba describes the reasons why Marian Lupu and Viorel Chetraru should no longer run the Court of Accounts. According to the deputy, the two were appointed following a formal, non-transparent contest, thus the current leadership is politicized. "In order to protect the independence of the institution, we must eliminate the current leadership", wrote Dumitru Alaiba.

The MP said that Marian Lupu and Viorel Chetraru are responsible to audit how "Plahotniuc's government spent the money", which is a conflict of interest. Additionally, Dumitru Alaiba pointed out that Plahotniuc is still controlling the Court of Audits and that the current government has committed itself to the European Union to ensure the Court's independence.

According to Dumitru Alaiba, another reason why the Court's leadership needs to be changed is the fact that the institution is inefficiently managed.

"In this regard, we registered a new legislative initiative today, which will allow us to free the Court of Audits," wrote Dumitru Alaiba.

Marian Lupu was appointed president of the Court of Audits on February 7 this year, being the only candidate to run for office.
