The motorists will be penalized for throwing out litter through the window. A relevant bill to amend the Contravention Code was passed by Parliament in the first reading on March 25. Under the bill, the throwing of objects, substances, waste and cigarette butts out of vehicles by drivers and passengers will be punished with a fine of 600 to 1 000 lei, IPN reports.

Bill author, Liberal MP Alina Zotea said the fine can be substituted with 40 to 60 hours of community service. “We consider it is necessary to impose penalties on the drivers who throw litter out on the street so as to make them more responsible towards the environment and society in general,” she stated.

The MPs asked to specify the punishment mechanism. Alina Zotea said the Government is to identify this mechanism, but she suggested penalizing the motorists based on photos and video recordings made by persons involved in traffic.

Democratic MP Dumitru Diacov proposed introducing the given penalties at municipal level initially and extending them later nationwide.

Currently, the Contravention Code provides only penalties for passengers from public transport who throw litter and other objects out through the window.
