The police will be able to test drivers for drugs of abuse by using such calibrated technical devices as the Drager Drug Test 5000, similar to the sampling system for determining alcohol inebriation. The bill concerning the drug testing method for identifying drug-impaired drivers was adopted by Parliament, IPN reports.
The drivers against whom contravention proceedings are instituted will be obliged to unconditionally accept drug testing at the request of the responsible authorities.
The General Police Inspectorate now has ten Drager Drug Test 5000 devices. The authorities aim to acquire more such sampling systems with the assistance of the development partners.
The legislative proposal was designed by the Ministry of Home Affairs in a move to prevent and fight the use of banned substances, to reduce the number of traffic accidents and to ensure the safety of citizens. The bill is to be given a final reading.
