The truck driver who in November 2021 tried to take anabolic steroids, medicines and hookahs to the value of over 1.2 million lei out of Moldova was given a five-year suspended sentence. The prosecution intends to challenge the sentence as too mild, IPN reports.

The goods were hidden in one of the two spare tires of the truck. The driver admitted that he wanted to sell the merchandise in Romania where he was to load his truck with furniture and carry this to Italy.

The 37-year-old man is from Anenii Noi and works for a Romanian carrier.

The Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases said the Hâncești Court’s refusal to confiscate the equivalent value (1.1m lei) of the truck and trailer used to commit the offense will also be challenged. “This challenge will follow another challenge that was satisfied by the Hâncești Court in October 2022, in a case of smuggling of 150,000 cigarettes when the confiscation of the monetary value of 655,000 lei of the unit of transport used to commit the offense, which didn’t belong to the culprit, was ordered,” the institution said in a press release.
