The driver who fatally hit a female bicyclists on a central artery in Hagimus village of Căușeni district with his car in December 2016 while under the influence of alcohol and left the place of the accident was sentenced to nine years in jail and was banned from driving for a period of five years. The culprit was taken in custody from the courtroom, IPN reports, quoting the Prosecutor General’s Office.

The driver didn’t stop to help and left the victim lie in a roadside ditch. The body of the woman was found by her son who was looking for his mother who didn’t answer the phone. The woman was 54 and worked as a vendor at a local shop. That evening she was heading home from work.

The man was arrested at his domicile shortly afterward. Blood was found on his car. He is 32 and was earlier sentenced for robbery.

The culprit was also obliged to pay 110,000 lei in respect of pecuniary and non-pecuniary damage to the successor of the victim and 1,600 lei court costs.

The sentence can be challenged in an appeals court.
