The driver who last autumn hit by his car two young women in Botanica district of Chisinau was sentenced to four years in jail and banned from driving during a period of five years. The prosecutors consider the sentence is illegal and intend to challenge it and ask for a harsher penalty for the violation of traffic rules that caused the death of two persons, IPN reports.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the accident happened on November 22 last year in Botanica district. Traveling on Decebal Blvd, the young man exceeded considerably the legal limit and illegally overtook other vehicles, striking fatally two girls aged 20 who were crossing the street. The impact was so violent that one of the victims died on the spot, while the other one died at the Mother and Child Institute in several hours.

The driver turned out to be related to a former head of the Chisinau Traffic Police. The prosecutors took over this case so as to ensure objectivity in the investigation. It was established that the culprit drove at a speed of 119 km/h when the accident happened. During the last few years, this committed a series of traffic rules violations, including speeding and road accidents, and was fined and got 26 penalty points.

Before the judgment was passed, the 26-year-old man had been in custody. When he was questioned by prosecutors, he admitted his guilt.
