The Bender Court of Appeals upheld the sentence of the Anenii Noi Court, which sentenced the driver of a minibus who is to blame for the death of eight passengers in an accident near Bulboaca to nine years’ imprisonment, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The first court’s decision was challenged by the culprit, who asked for a milder punishment. The driver has three children, whom he raises alone as his wife died.
By the same sentence, the man was banned from driving a vehicle for a five-year-period. The court also accepted the civil lawsuits filed by the victims and their successors, ordering paying total damages of 774,000 lei, the Prosecutor General’s Office has said.
According to the prosecutors, on November 1, 2011 the driver of the minibus running on the Serpeni-Chisinau route ignored the red color of the stoplights and the sound alarm not far from Bulboaca, Anenii Noi, and crossed the railroad. The vehicle was struck by a train. Eight persons were killed and 14 injured in the crash.
