The driver accused of causing the accident near Codreanca, in which five people died, was placed in preventive detention for 30 days. The decision was pronounced by the Strășeni Court on Wednesday, press officer of the Strășeni Police Inspectorate Mariana Didenco has told IPN.
The accident occurred on August 10. The 22-year-old man is accused of causing a head-on collision with another car during wrong-way driving. Both of the vehicles caught fire following the impact.
In the car that the young man was driving, his girlfriend aged 17 and a 56-year-old woman, who took a ride by the car together with three grandchildren aged 6, 7 and 13, died. In the second car, the driver aged 37, his wife, 32, and the woman’s mother, 54, died. The couple’s children, aged one and 9, were taken out of the vehicle by passers-by.
All the five children involved in the accident were taken to the Mother and Child Institute. The 9-year-old child remains in the Intensive Care Unit. The others are in the Orthopedics Division and will remain in the hospital at least this week, the institution’s spokesman Maxim Cazacu has told IPN.
For such accidents resulting in the death of a number of people, the penalty is 6 to 10 years in prison and ban on driving.
