The Moldovan theaters face two serious problems: low subsidies from the state and lack of message in the produced plays, people of culture said, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. In a news conference held to open the 2010-2011 season of the National Theater “Mihai Eminescu”, dramatist Dumitru Matkovski said the Soroca Theater bearing the name of Veneamin Apostol has neither a building nor troupe, while the plays are mainly performed by actors of “Mihai Eminescu” because the state does not support this theater. The Soroca Theater needs 5 million lei to repair the building allotted to it, but the Ministry of Culture cannot provide this money. The National Theater is also in a difficult situation, said its director Ion Grosu. During seven years, the theater has not been subsidized by the state. In another development, Dumitru Matkovski said there has been no dramaturgy during the last 20 years because the produced plays convey no important messages. According to him, the plays stages today a kind of pulp writing. Invited to the news conference, Minister of Culture Boris Focsa said the theaters cannot depend on state subsidies only and their managers should attract investment projects so that these institutions could develop. The new season at the National Theater opens with the premiere of Dumitru Matkovski's play “Lullaby for Grandparents”, directed by Sandu Cozub. The play will be put on Friday, Saturday and Sunday starting at 6pm.
