About 30 trees were cut in the forest-park of Rascani district of Chisinau during only two days. Ecologists warn that the trees were cut without authorization and intend to inform the competent bodies. On the other side, representatives of the municipality say only the dry trees are cut and the works have been authorized.
Vladimir Garaba, head of the Chisinau local organization of the Ecologist Movement of Moldova, has told IPN that there were cut living trees too, on the pretext of regenerating the forest stock. The place from where the trees were cut is situated in a picturesque area near a lake and locals presume that an entrepreneur who wants to erect apartment buildings there was behind that act.
According to Vladimir Garaba, as a result of discussions with representatives of the municipality, it was decided to plant 100 linden trees instead of the cut trees so as to calm things down. The Chisinau local organization of the Ecologist Movement of Moldova will seek information from the State Ecological Inspectorate about the legality of the tree cutting.
Contacted by IPN, head of the Chisinau Green Areas Association Eliferii Haruta assured that only dry trees are cut, mainly birches, acacias and spruces. The trees were to be cut earlier, but the works were delayed owing to the lack of funds. A sum of 830,000 lei was allocated from the municipal budget this year for cutting dry trees. Works will be performed in all the green areas of Chisinau. Maple and linden trees will be planted instead as they are resistant to high temperatures. The samplings will be provided by the Chisinau Ecological Agency.
