Antique earthenware, tools and coins are on display at an exclusive exposition in the wood of Stolniceni village in Hancesti district. The objects were found in the same settlement as a result of digs carried out by a group of history teachers of the State University of Moldova (USM) and the Cahul-based University “Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu”, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Tudor Arnaut, a history teacher at the USM, said the excavations in that area started in1933. Also then, there were discovered the first antique ceramics and human skeletons. The digs were stopped and then resumed in 1993.
“The legend of Stolniceni village was the starting point. It was rumored that the Turk’s Fortress existed there. The researchers followed the given route and arrived here, where they saw piles of earth. They dug and found the antique objects,” said Tudor Arnaut.
Besides the multiple objects found in this village, the archeologists discovered three Turkish-type wells made of tree logs. “There were also found a pitcher with 50 coins dating from the third-fourth century BC. It was a kind of spiritual place of the Geto-Dacians typical of that generation.
“The place was full of tumuli. We hollowed out three of 21. In each section, we found by 16 to 21 complete and incomplete skeletons,” said the professor.
According to Tudor Arnaut, they do not have a specialized anthropologist, who would determine the human osteology of the discoveries. The examinations are now performed by Romanian specialists.
The exhibition in Stolniceni will be open until the end of September. The digs will continue meanwhile.
