Dozens of black balloons will be released on the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims in order to pay homage to the victims of road accidents and their families. The ceremony will take place in the Great National Assembly Square on November 17 starting at 11.00. According to Ion Roscovanu, inspector of the Road Security, Administrative Supervision and Public Relations Service of the Chisinau Traffic Police, the organizers want to sensitize the society to the real number of deaths as a result of road accidents. The balloons will be released from a car that was completely destroyed in a traffic accident, transported in the Square by another vehicle. Officials of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, road accident victims and relatives of people that died or were seriously injured in car accidents will speak about tragedies on the road. Twenty-two people were killed and 114 injured in road accidents in Moldova this Month alone. Since the start of this year, the traffic accidents claimed 380 lives. Some 2,710 people were injured. The most serious accidents occurred as a result of excessive speeding, irregular crossing of the street, not giving way, driving under the influence of alcohol and non-adaptation of the speed to traffic conditions. Ion Roscovanu says that prevention of road accidents, protection of the life and health of the people and of the goods is one of the priorities of the traffic police, which hope that the traffic participants will never forget the message “Life Comes First! Road crashes kill 1.2 million people every year and injure or disable as many as 50 million more. They are the leading cause of death among young people between 10 and 24 years. The World Day of Remembrance - the third Sunday of November each year - draws attention to the devastating consequences of these deaths and the need for action.
