Orthodox Christians following the Julian calendar today enter the fast of the Dormition of the Mother of God, also known in Moldova as the Saint Mary Fast. It will last two weeks, culminating with the Dormition Feast on August 28.
This is one of the Orthodox Church’s four major annual fasts. The Dormition Fast is stricter than the other fasts, as the only day in which some fish and wine is allowed is the Transfiguration Feast on August 19, regardless of which day it falls on. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and over the weekend, oil is also allowed.
The Church exempts children, expectant mothers, and people with bad health from fasting. During this period, believers are required to abstain from partying and go to church more often.
