A society that respects and protects the journalists is one that embraces the European truth and values. When democracy is threatened by elements of hybrid warfare – disinformation and propaganda - society relies on a free and independent press to obtain truthful and impartial information, Prime Minister Dorin Recean said in connection with World Press Freedom Day, IPN reports.

According to the official, a free media market must be further developed to support quality journalism, which informs and is thought-provoking, but also to have a clean audiovisual space, free from propaganda and disinformation.

Premier Recean noted that on this day”"he stands by those who bring the truth into our homes”, truth that cannot be suppressed. “Our unity in defending this fundamental value is essential for democracy in the Republic of Moldova. I encourage all the citizens and government institutions to continue to support and protect a free and independent press,” added the official.

World Press Freedom Day is marked around the world on May 3. This day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 following a Recommendation adopted at the twenty-sixth session of UNESCO’s General Conference in 1991.
