Prime Minister Dorin Recean urged the young people to be active and participate in the October 20 referendum on joining the EU. In his opinion, the young people have a kind of duty to get involved because freedom, in fact, starts from the power to decide. “This is where our role of participating in important decisions and involving others begins,” Dorin Recean said at the Moldova Youth Forum 2024, IPN reports.

“Politicians decide policies, while policies influence the reality. We must be aware that our future depends also on us,” stated Dorin Recean.

The official noted that it is the task of all the young people, and not only, to make the opportunity to join the EU a reality. It is necessary to explain what the European Union means to all those with whom the young people communicate and interact. Dorin Recean urged the young people to get involved, to be economically active, socially active, regardless of the activity carried out.

The young people inquired whether Moldova has enough specialists for negotiations with the EU and whether the authorities will have the courage not to accept particular conditions that will not be to the advantage of the state and the citizens. Premier Recean answered that there are particular specialists, but more are needed. Other specialists are being trained, including in the EU. Likewise, there is expertise from EU member countries and international experts. He added that the negotiations do not mean that Moldova or the EU imposes its agenda. The parties reach an agreement as regards the adjustment and implementation of the legislation, the objective being to build the EU at home.

The young people also asked what will happen if the October 20 referendum fails. Dorin Recean replied that there can be no other option than to work 24 hours a day to bring Europe home.

The official was also asked about the young people’s role in combating disinformation and promoting a realistic image of Moldova in the EU. Dorin Recean suggested that when they see an unrealistic news story, they should check the sources. It is also important to constantly inform oneself from credible sources of information. The Premier noted that disinformation has become more subtle. Under these conditions, critical thinking becomes the weapon against it.
