The Central Election Commission (CEC) requested the Ministry of Health to vaccinate the electoral functionaries as swiftly as possible so as not to allow hotbeds of infection to appear inside polling stations. CEC president Dorin Cimil said that a sum of 12 million lei will be spent on purchasing anti-COVID-19 supplies for the July 11 snap elections. He assured that the elections will be safe for the voters and for the persons who will oversee voting, IPN reports.

Dorin Cimil noted that the sum of 125 million lei needed for holding elections is larger than it was initially projected as they need to purchase masks, disinfectant and other supplies for preventing the spread of COVID-19.

“The CEC transmitted a large number of masks, visors, protective gowns and also a lot of COVID-19 protective equipment that remained from the presidential elections to the Ministry of Health for being stored. However, we earmarked 12 million lei for buying COVID-19 protective equipment,” Dorin Cimil stated in the program “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.

The official said the elections can be safe for the people’s health if physical distancing is maintained, the hands are disinfected and a large number of persons are vaccinated until the elections. The immunization of electoral functionaries already started.

“Back in March, we asked that if elections are called, the electoral functionaries should be vaccinated urgently. The first functionaries of the CEC were already vaccinated. Nine colleagues from the CEC got the first vaccine dose,” said Dorin Cimil.

Even if the mandate of the members of the CEC expires in June, Dorin Cimil said the current composition of the CEC will organize the snap elections of July.

“Under the Electoral Code, if the electoral period starts during the mandate of the current composition of the CEC, the mandate of the CEC members is extended for at most 90 days. This means we will be empowered to organize the elections of July 11,” stated Dorin Cimil.

The snap parliamentary elections will be held on July 11, 2021. On May 5, the electoral period begins officially. The candidates will start to be registered on May 12. The election campaign for each of the election runners starts the day they are registered by the CEC.
