The Liberal Party’s candidate Dorin Chirtoaca won the mayoral elections in Chisinau municipality. According to the results presented by the Central Election Commission with 100% of the votes being counted, Chirtoaca won 53.44% of the poll, while his opponent Zinaida Grecheanyi – 46.56%, IPN reports.
Dorin Chirtoaca, together with his team, waited for the final election results at the Liberal Party’s head office. The party’s staff celebrated Chirtoaca’s victory with champagne. The newly elected mayor said he expected such a result and thanked the voters, saying the European course of Chisinau municipality will be continued.
The Party of Socialists’ candidate Zinaida Grecheanyi also thanked those who voted for her. “I thank all those who put their trust in me and urge my supporters not to lose hope. We will continue to struggle and will fulfill our promises,” she stated. The Socialist leader Igor Dodon noted they do not recognize the election outcome and will challenge it in court because they identified multiple violations in the voting process.
The voter turnout in the second round of local elections was about 47%, down 1% compared with June 14. In Chisinau, the voter turnout was over 48%, almost the same as in the first round of the local elections. The voters in Centru district of Chisinau were the most active ones, while those in Ciocana – the most passive ones.
