Dorin Chirtoaca suggests renovating Schmidt House

Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca proposed renovating the house where Mayor Carol Schmidt lived, Info-Prim Neo reports. In the March 11 meeting of Chisinau City Hall officials, the mayor presented several pictures of the Schmidt House and instructed deputy mayor Nistor Grozavu to design a project to partially renovate the building. A corner of the house, which is located at the intersection of the streets Varlaam and Mihai Eminescu, needs to be plastered and a part of the roof slates must be replaced. “Money will be allocated from the 500,000 lei earmarked for the restoration of historical monuments. I think it’s possible from technical viewpoint to do this by the end of the year,” said Chirtoaca. The Schmidt House is privately owned. “I realize that we should not spend money on private property, but it’s an architectural monument. We can provide support to the owner and repair the building together with him,” said the mayor. Carol Schmidt had been mayor of Chisinau in 1877-1903.
