Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca proposes modifying the law concerning the taking of goods into and out of Moldova so as to allow importing vehicles of up to ten years. “Five years ago, the Communist government amended the legislation and introduced restrictions on the import of vehicles, banning the importation of cars older than seven,” the mayor told a news conference on Tuesday, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to Dorin Chirtoaca, the decision favors certain economic entities that import vehicles into Moldova and hinders thus the people from buying units of transport at reasonable prices. “The price of a car jumped from €2,000 to €5,000-7,000,” Dorin Chirtoaca said.
The mayor also said that if the proposal is accepted, there will be created better conditions for registering vehicles so that the Moldovans taking foreign cars into the country be stimulated to pay taxes into the national budget not the budget of the breakaway republic of Transnistria, where the taxes are lower.
“Furthermore, in this period of crisis, we could optimize the tax system and collect more revenues for rehabilitating Moldova's infrastructure, not simply giving this money to foreign traders in cars,” Dorin Chirtoaca said.
The mayor, who is the vice president of the Liberal Party, said he discussed this initiative with members of the party, who will present it in Parliament.
