Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca posted a message on his Facebook page shortly after last night's quake, whereby he calls on the population to remain calm and stay indoors.
"It is the most powerful earthquake in the last 25 years - 6.1 degrees on the Richter scale in Vrancea and 5.6 degrees in Chisinau. According to the Central Dispatcher's Office and the colleagues of the Emergencies Department, at least for now there have been no destructions or other negative consequences. It was felt most powerfully in Cahul," stated the mayor.
Head of the Experimental Seismology Center of the Institute of Geology and Seismology of Chisinau Ion Ilies has told IPN that the quake occurred at a depth of 82 km, while in Moldova it was felt with the intensity of 6 degrees on a scale of 12. It lasted for about 15 seconds.
According to the portal cutremur.net, the quake was moderate and measured 5.6-5.7 degrees on the Richter scale.
