In accordance with the current legislation, early local mayoral elections in Chisinau municipality can take place only on May 20. The Election Code says it clearly that the elections can take place two times a year, in spring and in autumn, and the elections were already set for May 20 this year, outgoing mayor of Chisinau municipality Dorin Chirtoaca stated in the talk show “In Depth” on PRO TV Chisinau channel, IPN reports.

Dorin Chirtoaca said that if there are early mayoral elections in Chisinau on May 20, the term in office of the future mayor will be of only a year. He hasn’t yet decided whether he will run in the future elections or not as a decision is to be taken by the Liberal Party.

According to the resigning mayor, the elections in the municipality are an opportunity to get rid of the ruling regime at the upcoming parliamentary elections. “If we manage to stage a wave of protest against the current regime in Chisinau and Balti on May 20 by the natural and unforced participation by political parties and candidates, the ruling regime will be removed by giving no vote to it,” stated Dorin Chirtoaca.

He noted that in the current situation, the Chisinau Municipal Council should vote an acting mayor general. “They should have done this last summer. They didn’t do it and the power in Chisinau has been thus usurped for over half a year,” he said.

According to Dorin Chirtoaca, the Chisinau City Hall remitted his letter of resignation to the Central Election Commission several days ago.

The Commission hasn’t yet published its decision on the resignation and on the eventuality of early mayoral elections following the expiration of the term in office of the mayor general of Chisinau municipality.

On February 16, the suspended mayor general of Chisinau municipality Dorin Chirtoaca announced his resignation. He said he took such a decision in protest at the abuses committed against him and the capital city.
