By the referendum that took place in Chisinau municipality, the citizens taught the whole political class a lesson and warned it that it should leave government, suspended mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca stated in the program “In Depth” on ProTV Chisinau channel, IPN reports.
Dorin Chirtoaca said the people gave a signal that they do not want to live in fear and do not want things to be dictated to them and that they want to choose people who would represent them. The massive absence from the referendum means a vote of confidence given to him, the fourth vote of confidence since 2007. “I know for sure that the people in 2007 voted me because they saw I was different from the others, and then voted me also in 2011 and 2015. The fact that I received three consecutive terms in office is great generosity. The fact that the people made a common cause in 2017, despite the recent developments, criminal cases, accusations and insulting, means that they have common sense, understood that things do not change overnight and appreciated all the efforts I made and the results I achieved,” he stated.
According to the suspended mayor, the referendum was illegal and was a farce by the Party of Socialists. No kind of ballots can be held when the person is suspended from post
The November 19 referendum on the dismissal of Dorin Chirtoaca from mayoralty wasn’t validated because of a low voter turnout - 17.54% of the required minimum of 33.3%.
Dorin Chirtoaca was arrested on charges of passive corruption and influence peddling in the pay parking spaces case on May 25 this year. He had been under house arrest until recently. Dorin Chirtoaca pleads not guilty.
