The radar DWSR-3501C, which is the most modern in the field, was purchased within the Moldova Disaster and Climate Risk Management Project. This project to the value of about US$1.5 million started to be implemented in November 2010, with the support of the World Bank. through the International Development Association. The tour on which the radar was put up was designed and built in Moldova. The elements of the radar were ordered from the U.S.

Attending the radar launch ceremony on March 21, acting Prime Minister Vlad Filat said that this new capacity obtained by Moldova with the initiation of this project will enable to come closer to the European standards.

”It is a very important project. We will be able to prevent and manage unfavorable weather conditions and to anticipate situations that can affect agriculture, aviation and transport,” said acting Minister of the Environment Gheorghe Salaru.

World Bank Country Manager Abdoulaye Seck said that the Moldovans should be proud that they benefit from such a radar that is the most modern in the field. “This system will help forecast the weather, but has also a long-term development goal,” he stated.

The radar will start work in May and will transmit information online. The first climate observations in Moldova were made in 1844. Since 1980, weather information has been provided by the State Hydrometeorology Service.
