Restoration work on the Circus building in Chisinau continues, with a phase targeting the dome and the roofing started in March 2023. The effort is carried out with the support of the EU-funded program Confidence-Building Measures Program, implemented by UNDP.
“In order to become an energy-efficient building, work was initiated to change the old thermal insulation, based on glass wool, with a new one based on basalt wool and lined with magnesium oxide plates. Now the roof of the circus will meet the demands of energy efficiency, and the new materials used will also provide fire protection. At this stage, work is being done on three sectors, namely: the covering of the dome, the terrace-type roof and the thermal insulation of the dome on the inside”, UNDP Moldova reported.
In the next period, the installation of the sheet metal covering of the dome is to be completed. Another effort includes the replacement of the glazed facade of the main building. By this time, the old stained-glass windows on the upper levels have been removed, and the installation of the new metal and aluminum profiles is about to begin.
The European Union offered over 1.8 million lei for the restoration, which covered the costs for technical expertise and design and for repair/conservation works in the first stage. For the following stages, the Moldovan authorities are expected to attract funding, including from development partners.
The Chisinau Circus is a building of great architectural value, and since May 2022, the building has been included in the Register of State Protected Monuments.
