Dog-days kill trees

The heat does not only torment people, but also trees, which fall to the ground because of the heat and drought. Eliferii Haruta, head of the municipal agency responsible for green spaces, told Info-Prim Neo that most vulnerable are trees over 40 years of age.
“We have trees older than 70, in the capital, and in drought conditions they are the first to fall. In the previous day four cases were reported. Even trees planted this spring are drying up. It breaks our hearts not to be able to save them. Even if we water them during the night, and they are already rooted up to 98%, they still cannot face the heat”, stated Eliferii Haruta.
He added that about 2,000 people are needed for managing all the green spaces in Chisinau. The agency, however, has only 300 employees. The Budget allocations are insufficient, covering only 30% of the minimum necessary.
Chisinau’s green spaces cover a total area of 3,000 hectares.
