President Igor Dodon has urged electoral rivals who “got frustrated” by the recent news of two Moldovan hostages being freed from Taliban imprisonment in Afghanistan to “rejoice and leave political speculations aside”.
“It is shameful to lament the fact that they have been freed now and not after elections. We are talking about human lives and fates here and there are moments when political speculations and brawls ought to be left aside, because besides political competition there ought to be morals and humaneness, no matter how hard it is to find these in Moldovan politics”, the president posted on his FB account.
Dodon said that the released hostages have already spoken with their families and will soon be home. He added that he’d had their file on his desk for a long time and did everything he could to expedite their release. “I wished badly their release could happen in 2018, so that thy could celebrate New Year at home, in the bosom of their families. But it wasn’t possible, as their situation was too complex”.
As Igor Dodon yesterday broke the news about the release, hailing Moscow’s and his own role in it, Speaker Andrian Candu went on to accuse the president of hijacking the operation and plotting with Moscow to obstruct the hostages’ earlier release so that their return home would happen at an opportune moment for Dodon’s Socialists’ campaign ahead of the upcoming general elections.
