The Government will remit the package of documents on the justice sector reform to the Council of Europe on January 3, Prime Minister Ion Chicu announced at the beginning of the Cabinet’s meeting, IPN reports.

The official said this package includes three elements. The first element refers to the strategy for ensuring the independence and integrity of the justice sector reform for 2020-2023. The second is the action plan for implementing the strategy and the third refers to the draft law on the assessment of judges.

“We pledged to remit these fundamental documents for the justice sector reform by January 5 so that the ad-hoc group of experts assigned by the Council of Europe comes to our country on January 20 and assists us in implementing this reform,” stated Premier Chicu.

After the meeting, Minister of Justice Fadei Nagachevski said work on the strategy lasted for several years. The previous proposals formulated by the Council of Europe were taken into account and the strategy was adjusted. The intention is to present the document to Parliament for adoption in February – March. The Constitution’s provisions on the Superior Council of Magistracy and the appointment of judges will have to be amended.
