The period for submitting documents for the registration of candidates for elective positions for electoral districts of the first level, where new and partial local elections will be held on May 19, begins on April 12, IPN reports, with reference to the Central Election Commission.

Political parties and electoral blocs can submit the package of documents to the district electoral councils of the territorial-administrative units where they intend to run. In the case of independent candidates, the same requirements apply, but instead of the decision on the nomination of candidates by the central or territorial body of the political party or electoral bloc, subscription lists with a sufficient number of signatures of supporters will be presented.

Subscription list forms can be requested as from April 12 from the electoral council of the electoral district in whose jurisdiction the independent candidate plans to stand as a candidate.

The list of candidates for the position of councilor is drawn up by respecting the gender quota of at least 40% for both sexes and according to the formula: minimum four candidates of the same gender for every ten seats.

On May 19, 2024, new local elections will be held to choose a new composition of local councils in Cairaclia and Salcia localities of Taraclia district, Chioselia Rusă and Cotovscoe villages of ATU Gagauzia and to choose the mayor in Tîrnova commune of Dondușeni district, Bucovăț city of Strășeni district, Sagaidac village of Cimișlia district and Hănăsenii Noi commune of Leova district. On the same day, mayoral by-elections will take place in Chioselia Rusă and Cotovscoe and a by-election for a new composition of the local council will be held in Cealîc commune of Taraclia district.
