The head of the vascular surgery section of the National Clinical Hospital of Chisinau is investigated in a case of corruption. He is suspected of asking for €1,700 and receiving €1,200 from a woman for operating her father, IPN has learned from the National Anticorruption Center.

According to the denouncer, at the start of this February, the woman’s father was hospitalized for surgery. The man was operated and was to undergo one more operation. The chief doctor said the second operation will be performed after the woman pays €1,200 for the first operation and €500 for the second.

At end-February, the woman transmitted €1,200 under the direction of anticorruption officers. The doctor took the money and gave the woman back €200, saying he offers her a “discount”. The second operation was to be performed at end-March, but the doctor delayed the surgery for different reasons.

On May 11, the doctor made statements at the National Anticorruption Center over this case and yielded up the taken money. He is investigated for passive corruption and faces up to ten years in jail, with a fine of up to 400,000 lei and ban on holding particular posts for a period of at most ten years.
