An obstetrician-gynecologist of the Balti Municipal Perinatal Center was sentenced to two years in jail for professional negligence that resulted in the death of a patient and a newborn, IPN has learned from the Prosecutor General’s Office.
At the end of 2012, after assisting a delivery, the doctor allowed discharging the woman too early. The woman’s state of health worsened as a result of an infection and she was hospitalized one week after giving birth. She was operated, but could not be saved.
In another case, the doctor didn’t correctly diagnose the state of a woman patient who was to give birth and, consequently, the child was born dead.
The doctor pleaded not guilty. Besides giving him a jail term, the court also obliged the doctor to pay over 300,000 lei damages to the injured parties.
The sentence can be appealed to a higher court.
