Sections for patients with terminal diseases may be opened in district hospitals to provide palliative services. The patients will be monitored and looked after round-the-clock. The move is contained in the draft strategy for developing the health system.

“The people with terminal diseases should not suffer and die at home. They must be looked after in a specialized institution, in a humane way,” Deputy Minister of Health Mihai Ciocanu stated for IPN. Accordion to him, the district hospitals do not work to capacity and their full reorganization is strictly necessary.

Mihai Ciocanu also said that after the strategy is approved, the health system will have a different structure. “It will be clear where the health system goes, while the development partners will support us with different projects. They are not yet very active because we haven’t set the steps that must be taken,” he stated.

The strategy for developing the health system envisions the reorganization of the district hospitals and the creation of zonal hospitals outfitted with modern equipment, where there will be treated patients from 4-5 districts. The strategy will be presented to the Government next November.
