A number of veterans demand that the National Union of Independence War Veterans convene the organization's congress and elect a new chairperson, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The organization's statute provides that the congress must be held once in two years and that the Union's chairperson holds the post for two years. The last congress took place in 2001, when Eduard Maican was elected chairman. When his term in office expired, we demanded convening the congress, but Maican and the persons close to him refused to,” veteran Valeriu Ciobanu said in a news conference on May 4. In another news conference held the same day, the head of the local organization in Ialoveni, Gheorghe Staci, said the lack of money is one of the reasons why the congress is not convened. “We must tackle the problems faced by the veterans together. The accusations made against the Union's administration and Eduard Maican personally are groundless and do not help solve the problems,” Gheorghe Staci said. He stated that the law on veterans, which says that the veterans have the right to travel by public urban and interurban units of transport free of charge and to take out preferential loans to improve their living conditions, is not implemented.
