A resident of the municipality of Chisinau, who says he is a member of the Social Democratic Party, demands that the local authorities pull down the monument to the victims of the Communist regime set up in the Great National Assembly Square.
The commemorative stone was put up in front of the Government by the City Hall, under ta decree signed by Acting President Mihai Ghimpu, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“The Constitutional Court ruled Mihai Ghimpu's decree is unconstitutional, but the stone is still there,” citizen Eduard Brutuc said in the meeting of the Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC). He stated he lives in Centru district and this monument upsets him every morning when he goes to work.
The Council's chairman Ghenadie Dumanski said the CMC cannot demolish this monument as the decision to place it wasn't taken by it.
Mihai Ghimpu on June 24 issued a decree, instituting the Day of Soviet Occupation and Commemoration of the Victims of the Communist Totalitarian Regime on June 28. A commemorative stone was unveiled in front of the Government on June 28, 2010. The decree was challenged by the Communists Party and the Constitutional Court on July 12 declared it illegal and annulled it.
