The association of people with disabilities “Dreptul de a fi” (“The right to exist”) accuses a woman hired to organize a fundraising concert of pocketing part of the proceeds and of continuing to collect money in the organization’s name even after the event.
Natalia Cerva, president of “Dreptul de a fi”, told a press conference on Wednesday that in August 2023 the organization decided to ask a professional to help them raise funds to finish the construction of a multifunctional center.
The organization hired a certain Alexandra Nita, a local events presenter who claimed to have experience in fundraising for sick children. Despite being offered a cut of the eventual proceeds for her services, Cerva says, the woman refused any recompense in what turned out to be a feigned act of kindness.
Due to some personal problems, Cerva, who lives with visual impairment, delegated organizational matters to Nita, and the latter used her personal bank account to collect the receipts. The concert, which was held last October, was a success, says Cerva. But of the 120,000 lei raised in total, the organization only received 58,000 lei from Nita, who skipped town the next day after the concert.
According to Cerva, Nita spent the stolen money on home renovation and a vacation.
