Dirk Schuebel, the Head of the European Union Delegation to Moldova, is optimistic about the future of Moldova's agriculture sector. “You have many good products and we will help your farmers to become competitive”, stated Ambassador Schuebel at a Thursday conference dedicated to the cooperation between Moldova and the EU in the area of agribusiness, Info-Prim Neo reports. Dirk Schuebel said he understood the fears of some farmers related to the opening of the market. “The same was in Poland in the beginning. When this country joined the EU, most producers were worried, but when they saw the subsidies rise tenfold, they changed their opinion”, said Dirk Schuebel. Moldovan Agriculture Minister Vasile Bumacov thanked the European Union for the support provided in developing and implementing agriculture policies. He noted in this respect that the adoption of the Law on Food Safety and the creation of an agency to supervise food safety along the entire farmer-to-table continuum was made possible thanks to the support of EU experts. Valeriu Bumacov said that he was also awaiting the adoption of laws on the infrastructure of the agriculture market and on the reformation of the wine-making sector. Stefan Condratiuc, the president of the Moldovan Farmers Association, said that Moldova can export to the EU market 1,500 tonnes of honey, of 70% of the total production. “The EU market is not a market about which you can say you conquered it once you entered it. Here you need to work hard all the time and offer new products so as to remain competitive”. The conference was organized by the European Business Association.
